John

John Wycliffe 響 Elliot
. . . your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.
--Psalm 128:3b

John Wycliffe Hibiki (響) Elliot was born on 15 May 2014 at ENA Ladies Clinic in Sapporo, Japan.  Like his older siblings, he has dual citizenship and therefore carries both a Canadian passport (like his father) and a Japanese passport (like his mother).  In Japanese he goes by Hibiki, and in English he goes by John or "Johnny."  His Japanese name "Hibiki" (響) is the word for a "sound," "echo," "shock or vibration" (as in earth tremors), "tone," or "ring."  We named him after the Bible verse 1 Thessalonians 4:16

"For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first."

In the Japanese translation the word for "sound (of the trumpet)" is hibiki.  We also had in mind that Jesus called his disciples James and John "sons of thunder."

In English he is named "John" after his paternal grandfather and after "the disciple whom Jesus loved."  He is named "Wycliffe" after Wycliffe College where his two older brothers were born.  He is named "John Wycliffe" in honour of the 14th century English scholar who championed the translation of the Scriptures into vernacular English.
