The Above Figures of the Dead and Missing are Now Out of Date

It is with great heaviness that I speak of these recent happenings along the Tohoku coast of Japan. The Tohoku has been my home since I was four years old and, naturally, I wish with all my heart the I were there now, to be a part of the OMF team that has been working in the disaster area for over a week now. It is a consolation, however, to have the opportunity to share with you tonight the ways in which the Lord has been allowing this team to honour His name through their labour of love.

先日東北地方沿岸部を中心とした大震災についてお話しすることは私にとって非常に辛いことであります。東北地方は私が4歳の頃からずっと私の故郷であり、私は心の底から今すぐにでも日本に帰国してOMFのチームが震災に遭われた地域で奉仕している支援活動に加わることが出来たらと願っています。
それが出来ないのが現実ですが、しかし、今夜こうして皆様に、どのようにして主がOMFチームの愛の働きをとおして主の御名が崇められているかを分かち合わせていただけることを感謝します。

5 Days after the quake, John Elliot and Martin Ghent, both OMF missionaries from Toronto, set out on a survey trip to see if there was anything they could do to help in areas at the northern edges of the hardest hit region; remote places that were not getting as much attention from the media or the rescue crews, even though they had suffered the highest ratio of casualties. This trip was organized in consultation with CRASH, which is the Christian relief organization that OMF cooperates with in Japan. With the help of local Japanese Christians they scrounged together some extra gasoline and loaded a small truck with food and other items desperately needed in the devastated areas. At the conclusion of their trip, it was decided, in consultation with local Japanese pastors, to focus efforts on 3 towns. The soon to arrive OMF teams would begin by restoring local church buildings and then give whatever assistance they could to the surrounding neighbourhoods.

地震発生から5日後に、オンタリオ州出身のOMF宣教師エリオット・ジョンとマーティン・ジェントが正式に被害状況の調査を依頼されました。これは、被害が深刻であった地域の、特に北部の辺りでまだ支援が行き届いていないと思われる地域を対象に、具体的にどのような支援が出来るのかを調査するのが目的でした。この調査は、OMFとCRASHというクリスチャンの支援団体とが合同で行ったものです。調査団は、地元のクリスチャンの方々の協力により、予備のガソリンを手に入れることが出来、軽トラックに食料や緊急に必要な物資を積んで震災地へと出発しました。調査をしつつ地元の牧師先生たちと話し合った結果、主に3ヶ所の町への支援をすることとなりました。もうすぐ到着するOMFチームは、先ずは被害に遭った教会の復興、そしてその教会周辺の住民の方々への支援へと広げていく予定です。

With the arrival of the first OMF team from Hokkaido, work began on restoring the building of Kamaishi United Church. The team also made time to help the neighbours. I quote:
We cleaned out the elderly couple's tea house across the street. Only 1 of hundreds. This is one thing that can be done by anyone—random acts of kindness in Jesus name. No one is refusing these days—its is so gross and so overwhelming. Reminds me of the first days of the early church where they cared for the sick when everyone else fled the city.
Notice the huge pile of rubble that was swept into the church building by the tsunami. While removing it, our team discovered a salmon and a baby shark. Over a thousand people are dead or missing in this small city of Kamaishi.

北海道から到着した最初のOMFチームがとりかかったのは、日本キリスト教団釜石教会の建物を修復する働きでした。また、近隣住民の方々へも支援の手を差し伸べました。チームの日記よりお読みします。「教会の近くにある年配のご夫婦が経営する喫茶店を片付けるのを手伝いました。イエスの御名によって親切な行いをもって愛を示す、これは誰にでも出来ることの一つです。誰も支援を拒否する人達はいません。被災地は非常に汚れており、想像を絶する状況です。初期教会の頃を思い出させます。疫病を恐れ、街中の人達が逃げ出すような時、初期教会の人達だけは残り、病気の人達を介抱しました。」
教会内に大量に流れ込んだ瓦礫の山をご覧ください。チームメンバー達は、その瓦礫の中に、鮭、そして鮫の赤ちゃんを見つけました。この小さな町では、一千人以上が死亡もしくは行方不明となっています。

Work has also begun on the restoration of Ohfunato Bible Baptist Church. Out of a population of over 40,000, only 5 attend this church, and only a further twenty attend the united church. Ohfunato has a long history of repeated destruction by tsunami. This month's tsunami reached a height of over 23 metres and the city has once again been destroyed. The water from the tsunami nearly reached the ceiling of the Baptist Church's sanctuary, so the OMF team spent part of last week removing all the drywall and hosing down the interior. This coming week they hope to install new drywall, open a soup kitchen at the church, and help people in the neighbourhood to clean and fix their houses. This is a lucky neighbourhood. They still have houses. Please pray that our team can also find ways to help those who have lost everything.

大船渡聖書バプテスト教会でも修復作業が始まりました。人口4万人以上のこの町で、ほんの5名の方がこの教会へ集い、その他、ほんの20名しか教団の教会へ集っていません。大船渡は、過去に何度も津波による被害を受けて来た長い歴史のある場所です。今回の津波は23メートル以上もあり、この町はまたも壊滅状態となりました。津波はバプテスト教会の礼拝堂の天井まで達するほどでした。OMFチームは先週、石壁を外し、床を洗う作業を行いました。今週は、新しい石壁を取り付け、教会のキッチンで、スープを作って近隣住民の方々にふるまい、近所の家等を修復するのを手伝う予定です。この地区は幸いにも家自体は残っています。どうぞチームが、家も含み全てを失った方々の手助けもすることが出来るようお祈りください。

The town of Ohtsuchi. The official figure is 463 dead and 1,032 missing, but early local estimates are that between half and two-thirds of the population of 16,000 are either dead or missing. Perhaps we will never know the real numbers. The town records, the municipal government, the fire station, and the police headquarters have all been swept away by the tsunami. There is no church in Ohtsuchi. Pray that, as more and more volunteers join our OMF team, the Lord will guide them in finding ways to serve and to bring glory to the name of Christ in this town as well.

大槌町です。公表されている死亡者数は４６３名、行方不明者数は１０３２名ですが、実際は人口1万6千人のうち3分の2が死亡もしくは行方不明だろうということです。おそらく私たちは正確な人数を把握することは不可能ではないかと言われています。町役場、消防署、警察署等、主要な公共機関の建物が全て津波によって流されてしまいました。大槌町には教会がありません。OMFのチームに加わるボランティアの方々が増えるに従って、主が彼らにこの町でどのように仕え、キリストの御名に栄光をもたらすことが出来るか見い出せるよう、お祈りください。

The Sendai Earthquake Relief Fund, an OMF Japan project, has been created to channel funds for OMF’s and CRASH’s earthquake/tsunami relief and recovery work.
Funds donated to the project will be used:
1) For OMF-initiated relief and recovery work. Funds are required to purchase relief supplies, including blankets, bottled water, food, fuel and water containers, and electric generators, as well as to purchase equipment needed by the team, to pay for fuel and other transport costs and to cover other costs associated with relief initiatives including contractor or legal fees. As relief work gives way to recovery work, the supplies and equipment required will change from basic necessities to things like tools and materials to help clean up and repair homes, churches and other kinds of facilities.
